Refugee
He made the crossing the situation was bad
Clutching a cloth bag with all he had
The journey was perilous, he could have drowned
This was the first time he had left his hometown
He arrived at dawn the sun was rising
He felt peaceful it was calm and uplifting
No bombs, gunfire or rubble strewn around
It was greener, cleaner and more pure somehow
He was herded with all the rest
Taken to a camp full of tents
Doctors checked him and made some notes
They consulted with one another and asked him some more
For the time being they told him to move on
Gave him a hot meal and a blanket for the cold
He settled down in a tent and tried to sleep
Wondered what the morning would bring,
He couldn't remember anything or recall
His mind had stopped functioning at all
All he could do was feel the way he did
He was happy and his heart was settled.
The next day he was called to meet
The doctors and someone with authority
He sat at a desk and watched them talk
He did not understand anything at all
He's got dementia, can't remember his name
He's old, has a weak heart and won't live long
Just then they all looked across to him
He met their eyes and broke into a sweet smile!
